Warship transplant day two

Today I’m in the process of fabricating the motor mounts now the non powered bogie is in place. That was relatively easy to achieve a flat piece of card one hole and a 5mm bore spacer. To powered end is more challenging.

That’s the hard bit out of the way now its adding strengthening webs.

Webs done it's DCC ready! And the body fits. Tidy.

Warship transplant

I have just made a start in modding my Mainline Warship “Kelly” basically I’m junking the mainline bogies and replacing them with Hornby items remove from the “Railroad” model I bought for £29 off eBay. I know these are not perfect but they are a marked improvement over the “mainline” offerings

Rolling Road la deuxième partie

My metal sections arrived from Birmingham and I had them cut to size +.5mm to allow for machining. Unfortunately the weather is not warm enough for me to venture up to my workshop to machine the parts for assembly.

Just to give you an idea of where I am going with this I enlisted the help of “double sided tape”. The square section will have a 6 mm hole bored through so the eight assemblies can be mounted on two parallel arms  four each side. Each side electrically isolated from each other.

Rolling Road

Yesterday I dismantled and salvaged 12 roller bearings from some defective hard disk drives just the job for my proposed rolling road, each bearing is 9.5mm in diameter and 6.5 mm wide and the centre is shoulders and threaded 2mm. a pair will be mounted on a section of aluminium angle, but more of that later.

Letchworth Model railway exhibition.

Yesterday was the Letchworth model railway club exhibition; I was a little disappointed with the content down on last year. Sellers were asking silly money for stuff and some of it was rubbish. I did however get my JCB Mk3 and a cooper craft tanker trailer. A power bogie for my warship was £34 come on get real.

A quick check on EBay resulted in a Hornby R3068 class 42 “Formidable” £29.99 post free Tidy a bargain. Now what to do with the Mainline version well today she was prepared for the repaint of the yellow front I think strip the gears and use her for set dressing.

Pug No2

After a lengthy rebuild in the loco works pug No2 was rolled out of the paint shop this morning being pushed by her sister “Linda” to the final erecting shop to get the cylinder and coupling rods fitted.

No19 shortly after her arrival at Dunspendin October 2013

Now as No2 she is being pushed by her sister “Linda”

a marked difference to her arrival at Dunspendin still a lot to do in the final assembly shop.

Jiggy Jig

Not a lot happening mainly because I do not feel at all well. I did order some bits from Abbiegails (Hornby Spares) in the shape of a few screw packs and 4 sets of J94 coupling rods in red. It had given me time to contemplate the setting up of the point motors. This is the jig I came up with. Keep tuned to see if it was a good idea or not!

Steam Up

Today I finished chipping two locomotives my pug and 68080 my J94. Not much else to say really a few tweaks required on the CV’s and those crappy switches under the points need adjusting again!

The Champagne flowed freely!

Today is a milestone in the restoration of our L&YR pug. SWMBO performed the naming of the locomotive. Her ladyship declined to be photographed standing next to the locomotive muttering something on the line ‘too big’. Later her ladyship said, I can hardly read that,’ its too small’. Tonight we will enjoy a celebratory curry and a can of lager.

Overcoat

Second coat on the body, a few little bits to touch up around the cab and cab roof. The first coat on the buffer beams. I do think paint manufacturers make their paint thinner now! Red used to cover quite well back in the day.

Today started off badly

Today started off badly I was awake on and off most of the night when I arrived at work I was feeling really ill blinding headache. Anyway I went back home to sleep it off and I must say I feel 100% better for it. I though that while Linda was watching the “soaps" this evening I would sort the pugs derrière, here are the results.

The final screw!

My scrapper arrived from fleabay today, I’m not disappointed although, after a strip down I discovered she was also abused at some time as her chassis has a chunk ripped out where someone never remove the final screw! And her rear end has been mutilated, again heavy wear on the nylon axel gear. Plus points working motor with brass worm and an intact motor mount coupling rods and bolts hand rails and handrail knobs.

An enjoyable 2 hours spent fabrication a new cab I knew that old Dapol roof would come in handy.
